Sources abound for acquiring dried shrimp (and little dried fish, too). They are available with or without seasoning (chili). The question I have asked many of my Mexican friends is, 'What do you do with them? How do you use them in cooking?'
'We just eat them. Maybe you might add hot sauce, or salt, or lime juice, or all these.' Well, that sounds just plain boring to me. You can do that to almost anything in Mexico. And I have an aversion to eating shells and spines and scales. Anyone have any recipes using these? I have used the dried, seasoned shrimp in a dip. I whiz them in the blender until powdered, add 2 tablespoonsfull to a half pint of sour cream and stir to combine. I have tried some variations to this. Any other ideas most welcome, except leave them in the market ![]()

Here around Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacán, they eat little dried minnows. Yuck.

In any "country" where freezing and or refrigeration is nonexistent or a luxury ...you will find "dried" everything. Dried shrimp is used so gloriously in Thai (pad Thai for eg. ) in Asian cabbage soup, in Mexican dishes, S. American, New Orleans CAJUN & Indosnesian.tooo..
..to flavour soups, sauces and "dim sum" type dishes...do NOT fear being adventurous in your cooking...ask (with enthusiasm) the proprietor what "they" use these delectable finds for..and ....SNITCH some awesome recipes and SHARE them with all of us : ![]() |

In most of Asia they make great soups out of dried 'sealife' including shrimp. I wouldn't know what to do with those large dried shrimp they sell in Mazatlan.

I was in Puerto Pinasco, and had an AMAZING creamy 'dried shrimp' sauce with some Tamales- (Which each had an olive with thier pit in the middle). It was one of the best things I have ever eaten. If anyone has ever heard of this and knows where I could find the recipe I would be thrilled! Thanks!

I tasted that once, a little weird at the beginning, but amazing nonetheless.
