We've rented a beach house in June, and since we have a very short flight, we were wondering if we can bring a big cooler of food into Mexico. Does anyone know if this is okay?
Thanks! |

Yes, for the most part. There is some concern about fresh meat, but if it's in the original stamped and approved package you should be all set. Here's a link to what you can bring in: http://www.embamexcan.com/CONSULAR/FQbringingpets.shtml

Why would you want to go the trouble of bringing your food? Food is not expensive in Mexico and the quality is great. I could think of so many other things I would want to bring with me when flying into Mexico for vacation that would be much higher up on my list...

Your grocery stores in the USA go to great lengths to provide you with fresh food at all seasons. They do so by buying a great deal of it from Mexico where the growing season is almost all year long.
So, you would probably just be bringing food back to Mexico! Uncooked meat is prohibited, as are other products depending upon the state your are entering. Therefore, why bother? Baja is correct; the food here is abundant, fresh, safe and delicious. You will find giant supermarkets just like at home and all the familiar products. I am amazed by the number of folks who ask this question and I can only assume that they will be visiting Mexico for the first time and have watched too many old Western movies. Just bring your toothbrush; or not.....Oral B and Crest are here too!

Just last March I flew in with a big bag of chiles I had picked from my house in California, and the aduana confiscated it.
I have driven in many times with coolers packed with soft drinks, processed cheese, storebought fruit and vegetables and if they looked processed or packaged, OK, but if it looks like it might have come from your garden or farm, you will have a problem. If you are close to a WalMart, Gigante, Comericial, Aurrera, Bodega, SuperKompras, Garces, Garis, or Chedraui you are better to purchase the food there. |

Bring cheeses, if you like strong cheeses. Any other sausages other than chorizo. Normal stuff is available and cheap as said. There are supermarkets in most towns and smaller markets for daily needs like eggs, bread, milk etc.

Leave the food at home.

This reminds me of when I was in the navy and our ship pulled into Hong Kong. The first thing a bunch of the younger guys did was head to MacDonalds. If you are vacationing in a foreign country, eat their food, listen to their music and enjoy doing something new. Mexico has some of the best food in the world, give it a try and leave the Velveta at home

You may discover that you have never eaten so well with all the fresh food available in the markets in Mexico.
As for eating out in restaurants, you may discover that Mexico offers truly international cuisine. Some of it, as in Mazatlan where we vacationed recently, is as good as it gets; truly fine dining is available in many restaurants. I have never had better Italian food, filet mignon or seafood than I ate last week in several restaurants. Groceries for our kitchen came from Gigante. Now I have a few extra pounds to shed and nobody is putting chocolates on my pillow now that we are home.
