You already now what's going on after Hurrican Katrina, but I think the long term scope of the disaster can't really be understood until a full assessment of the damage is made. The hurrican relief effort going on right now will continue for many weeks and months, as people try to recover from the loss of loved ones and try to get their lives back together.
Put simply, most of these people have no life to return to - there's nothing there. And what is there will be bulldozed down to begin the long process of rebuilding. The survivors will have to find new homes, new jobs and new lives, and just start over. NOW is the time to come to the aid of your fellow country man and woman, whether you live in Mexico part-time, most-of-the-time, or have gone for good (or just dream about living in Mexico). Hundreds of thousands of Americans need your help and assistance. And they need that help for many months to come. The easiest way for you to help is to make a cash donation with your credit card to one of the 2 largest organizations providing relief: The American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. There are many other groups that can help or course (and many efforts to bring donated goods to the victims), but with these you know you can trust your information is safe and the money is going to where it's intended right at the front lines. Take a moment to make a donation, however small, to help at a time when it is really, really needed. Show them that the expats (and those of us stateside too) are pulling for them.

I recommend the Salvation Army over the Red Cross, which has had many problems in its past. True, it appears most have been corrected, but the Salvation Army is a first-rate organization and has always been a first-rate organization.

I received this offer of help.
Mexican R and B Hi, I just read in Portal San Miguel about the two families previously from San Miguel who have been evacuated due to the hurricane. I own an apartment building in Dallas which has 2 two bedroom two bath and one bedroom one bath apartments which I can offer free of charge until these families can get assistance from FEMA. The building is in a quiet neighborhood near bus lines and close to downtown Dallas and Baylor Hospital. There is a neighborhood park across the street. The units have berber carpets, security gates, refrigerator, stove and all utilities paid. Unfortunately they are not furnished but they are way better than a shelter. Please call me at 925 837 3741 or cell phone 510 612 8410. Let me know if I can help. Lynda Hart |
