My wife and I have received our FM-3 visas and wish to bring our 1982 pickup truck to Mexico and leave it there for our future use. What are our options?

Stuart...I am american living in the Yucatan. I brought a pickup in with me, but am living here full time. You shouldn't have any problem bringing it in, or leaving it here for a while if you fly back home. However, I believe you are only allowed one vehicle per person. You would not be able to bring another vehicle in, unless it is in your spouses name and she is driving.
There is some way to get an older vehicle "nationalized", and I am sure someone on this forum has the particulars on that. If you did that, you could bring a 2nd vehicle in then I believe. |

From now until Dec. 31, 2005, Presidente Fox is allowing older vehicles "chocolates" to be brought in and registered in Mexico at a reduced import tax rate, approx 10% of assessed value. The value will be determined by Mexico authorities, usually close to US Bluebook. After this period, import tax will be very expensive.
The vehicle must be older than 1995. You may get more info at your local Aduana or Hacienda where you will be living. Last edited by bear : 09-17-2005 at 11:06 AM. |
