Question Lodging in Morelia y Pátzcuaro

Two women needing one room with two beds for a couple nights in Morelia then 4 nights in Pátzcuaro and another night in Morelia. We don't need US style lodging but need clean and comfortable and safe with en suite bathroom (private bath per room). Would like to be within 5-6 blocks of the city/historic centers.
Rates? not economy but not premium either (75-150 USD/night?). I'll be celebrating a landmark birthday so would splurge a bit in Pátzcuaro.
My friend and her husband have traveled a bit in this area several years ago; this trip a gal trip, but we'd want a guarantee of two beds
Any recommendations?

Thanks,

No problem with a budget like that. There are 5 or 6 hotels right on the plaza in Morelia within that range but it's been awhile and I don't remember the names.

In Patzcuaro the same but more of them. I stayed at Hotel Gran which has a page on MexOnline. On the plaza chica. I would just go and expect to find a decent place as long as you don't arrive late.

Hi Mary, here is a link that has some hotels and info on Morelia. Also you might want to post in YahooGroups at the MoreliaConnect group. There are a lot of members from Patzcuaro there. The hotel de la soledad is a nice old hotel 1 block from the Cathedral in Morelia, it should be around 100/night.

With up to $150 a night to spend, you can tour here in grand style.

Here are a couple of very nice places, centrally (but not noisily) located, in Patzcuaro:

La Casa Encantada:

El Refugio Hotel and Suites:

I would prefer La Casa Encantada, but both are very nice.

Happy birthday.

Default Good news for Mary

Most of us, who live in Mexico, are in the habit of travelling to other towns and cities without reservations; it allows for flexibility. In my experience, we always head for downtown (el centro) and have always been able to find adequate to excellent accomodations for the equivalent of $40-$55 USD. Hotels in 'el centro' usually have parking below, or nearby, and give you the opportunity to be on the main squares (plaza), and within walking distance to lots of restaurants, a tourist office, city hall, etc. An added advantage is that local taxis, 'colectivos' and buses will be readily available for jaunts to surrounding points of interest. It can be fun to just get on one and make a round-trip to see where it goes.
Enjoy your trip.

I cannot say enough about the Hotel Alemeda. I have tried four different hotels during my stays in Morelia and while all were good it's the best for the price.

Great and helpful staff, some speak English, good food in the dining room. Overlooks the Centro. Check them out on Google. Make sure you get a front modern room, preferably on ther 3rd or 4th floor. In all these colonial hotels there is an old section, which looks out on a court yard and in some cases has no windows. The new rooms have lots of glass, modern bathrooms and the view of the square is great

as PS to my last post

Please do not stay at the Hotel de la Solidad. We did for one night and couldn't get out fast enough. It used to be a monestary and if you like monk like accomodations go for it/ No window, only a transom, tiny storage closet. shower that runs out onto the rest of the bath room floor, freezing cold at night-no heat, and they leave the lights on in the court yard all night so the birds never shut up.

Do not under stand how they get their rating

RICK DAVIS has a spectacular aura about
Default Patzcuaro / Morelia

Mary,

I live in Patzcuaro and will be glad to help with suggestions. I know of a place in Morelia, in Centro, that everyone raves about. Many of the hotels on the plaza are very noisy, if you get an interior quiet room they are dark. I will get back to you with the details on the one I reccomend.

In Patzcuaro I would reccomend La Casa Encantada for a mid range price. It is beautiful and one block from the plaza. www.lacasaencantada.com Also there is Hotel Meson de San Antonio, a little less in price but nice and walkable to the center as well www.mesondesanantonio.com . For a budget place ($20 - 25) I suggest Posada de los Angeles, very clean with a nice interior patio and quiet (434) 342 24 40.

I just happen to own Restaurant Cha Cha Cha, in Patzcuaro. The food is great, the environment beautiful, the staff the best, breakfast/lunch/dinner.
As one faces the Basilica we are two doors down the hill on the left.

Please don't hesitate if you need more help and I will try to get back to you on the info for the Morelia hotel.

Rick Davis
