I just wanted to say "Thank You Mexico!!"
You sent help over for the Huricane survivors and I just think that is the kindest thing you have done. Its nice seeing our friends help us in times of need. I wish everyone in Mexico can read this message, but I know thats not gonna happen, but please thank anyone who cares. Your very kind to lend a hand in our time of need Viva Mexico!! |

Like the 90+ other nations that offered assistance, Mexico's was certainly welcome. However, the Mexicans who went to the USA to help . . . most of them will be returning home shortly. Seems as if they aren't happy helping with the clean-up. They wanted more "interesting" things to do. Disappointing . . . yes. But, we should be grateful for the help offered and provided.

yes we should be greatful. And maybe not e be so critical of help. Maybe they wanted to come and help save lives and not necesarily clean up our mess when they probably have families at home to take care of. I lived in New Orleans until last year and everyone in town knew tha the levees wouldnt hold up to a big storm and everyone was waiting to be flooded out by the rising sea level. Our government never helped us. Maybe it is our responibility to clean up our own short comings. why be critical because citizens of another country are leaving two weeks after the fact? Are you in New Orleans helping clean up the mess?

Understand that Mexico has access to information the U.S. does not normally see and has learned that the Bush Administration could have prevented, or at least mitigated, the disaster in Louisiana. Helping those in need is one of the four cardinal virtues of the Catholic Church but even the most dyed-in-the-wool guadalupana does not recognize the cleaning up after someone else's stupidity as part of the doctrine. Proceso, that great butcher of sacred cows, cited warnings made to Bush by FEMA, NOAA, and LSU more than a year ago to the effect that New Orleans would not withstand a hurricane greater than Category 3 and that Bush refused to act on these warnings specifically because of lack of funds. He needs the money to turn the cradle of civilization into a dust bowl. The Army Corps of Engineers requested $14,000,000,000 to reinforce the flood-control structures, which date from 1927, and the Bush Administration authorized only $740,000,000. Hurricane Katrina has caused damage recently estimated to exceed $30,000,000,000. Something else that Proceso pointed out is that more than 85% of the 1,400,000 people affected by the hurricane are black. So, ¿Qué Sé Yo?, consider Fox's position in all of this. His approval rating is down there with Bush's and Proceso, which is likely the most respected weekly magazine in Mexico, has let the nation know how the Katrina disaster got to be as large as it is. And you think Mexico should clean up the U.S.'s mess? That's going to sound like Fox saying to Bush "yowza, massa, I do be sweepin' up fo' ya." It won't play well down here. Be thankful for what you have received. And shame on you for expecting more. Last edited by tijuanero : 09-19-2005 at 01:38 PM. |

FYI, Despite the White House urging for immigrant evacuees to come forward for help, Secretary Of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff is detaining and deporting these immigrants who approach the government for help in wake of Hurricane Katrina????In past hurricanes in Florida and during 911, DHS has suspended enforcement activities during relief efforts .Why not now during this tradgedy??

First of all, this Message Board is supposed to discuss the issues going on in Mexico, so let's keep it focused there.
Second, please don't use this board to politicize a tragic event. History and decades of warnings will show who was ineffective in preparing for and responding to the catastrophic event - especially as comparisons will be made in how things are handled for Hurricane Rita. America should always be grateful for assistance it receives from Mexico or other countries in the measure it is received, just as they should be grateful for the assistance America has provided over the many years, in the measure it has been given. Most everyone listed in this thread has been very generous with their participation on this board, for which I am grateful, but going the attack route never adds value to the discussion, which is why I always cut it short. Especially if it has nothing to do with Mexico. Now, (my favorite mantra) back to things taking place in Mexico. Which brings me to this point: if all-seeing Proceso is able to let the United States know how it should have taken action, with many known points to support it's story, why are they not able to avert tragic and preventable disasters in Mexico? The answer: it's easy for someone to play Monday morning quarterback/ soccer coach.

Rather as if they knew the rolfster was coming, Proceso did a special section this week on the Mexico City earthquake. Yes, the one from 1985. It's hard to call them Monday-morning quarterbacks when the incident happened twenty years ago. Proceso is really asking some trenchant questions whenever they report on disasters: What have we learned from our experience? What do we still need to learn from this in order to avoid a recurrence? In that same spirit, they published facts and figures not normally accessible within the U.S. that demonstrate the Bush Administration was more than negligent -- that it was actively indifferent -- to the needs of Louisiana. I don't see that Proceso was attempting to politicize a disaster -- if anything, they were putting the rest of the country on notice that the disaster had been politicized beforehand -- and the reason I cited Proceso's report was to show why Fox cannot afford to send more than humanitarian aid to Lousiana. Fox is in the toilet right now; he can't even get his own tapado nominated to take his place next year. Current public opinion is going to have a lot of bearing on the PAN's success in these next national elections. What part of this, in being mindful of the rolfster's mantra, has not taken place in Mexico? Well, there was the hurricane itself, of course. And then there was, at least in my view, a breathtakingly mean-spirited post from ¿qsy? in which he demanded that the Mexican armed forces sweep up the detritus of New Orleans. Yes, my life would have been happier without either of those. So I will repeat my previous assessment of Mexico's response to Katrina. Mexico, while generous, has to respect the requirements both of her religious beliefs and of her politics, and shame on anyone who would disparage her for not having behaved differently. |
