Default Documents for traveling with children

Does anyone know if you must have a picture ID with a birth certificate for a 17 month old?

Default Possibly

Ask the airline, if flying. Otherwise, I would suggest a picture ID issued in your state; better yet, a passport. Trafficking in children is common and birth certificates are very easily forged. The bigger problem might be getting back into the USA. I trust that both parents will accompany the child.

minor aged children do not require photo ids when travelling to Mexico until the end of this year. What you do need to travel with them:

An original copy or certified copy (with raised seal) of their birth certificate,

Birth certificates of both parents, if married you will need your marriage certificate.

Both parents will need their drivers license or state ids.

If both parents are not travelling with the child, then you will need a notarized letter from the parent not travelling with the child giving parent who is travelling with child permission to take child out of the country. Be sure to state which dates you will be travelling and exactly where the child will be going. If there are custody issues, then it would be a good idea to take a certified copy of custody papers as well.

Effective December 31, 2006 all travellers will require passports to enter Canada and Mexico.

We were just there with minor children and last year my husband took our son to Cozumel alone, these are the things that we were required to do.

Hope this helps,

Lanie

P.S. For domestic flights, most airlines are now requiring a birth certificate for minor children, FYI.
