Default US Baby - Only have birth certificate - OK?

We have a 6 week old baby girl born in the US. She is therefore a US citizen and we have her birth certificate. Is this adequate for us to visit Mexico or do we need some other kind of ID for her?

Default Birth Certificate

You nor your baby need a Passport. A passport is advisable, but Mexico accepts an official copy of birth certificates accompanied by an "officially issued" photo identification card. Both parents will need to accompany the child. In the case of only one parent with the child you will need to be ready to produce a notarized letter from the absent parent giving permission for the child to leave the USA for the trip into Mexico. My guess is that, given the age of the baby, you will not be asked to produce a photo ID for the baby, but, to be certain why not telephone the Mexican consulate closest to where you live. Good identification is important not only for entry into Mexico, but for re-entry into the USA, which, oftentimes, is more difficult than entering Mexico in these post-9/11 times. I don't know the process of having a child listed on a parents passport, but you can check with the U.S. Department of State Passport Bureau (or whatever that agency might now be called).

Depend on how you are traveling, by car you do not need Passport like Quin Soy Yo ? said, but if you enter the PORTS by Air by Cruise you do need it. When you apply for Passport there is a slot for you to put in your dependent name/ picture and prove of birth certificate.

Default No Passport Required

Mexico does not require U.S. citizens to present a U.S. Passport to enter Mexico, be the entry by cruise ship, by car or walking across the border or if you arrive at one of the country's airports.

I excerpted the following from the webpage of Mexico's Consulate in New York City 5 minutes ago:

Quote:
United States Citizens traveling to Mexico as Tourists do not need a visa. However, it will be required to present one of the following documents at the airport or port of entry into Mexico:

*Valid United States Passport;

*Original Birth Certificate and photo official identification (i.e., driver's license);

*Certified copy of Certificate of Naturalization and photo official identification (i.e., driver's license);

*Voter's Registration Card with photo official identification;

*Notarized Affidavit of Birth Facts and a official identification

If the child's parents are other than USA or Canadian citizens/legal residents, that fact may change the requirements they, individually, must comply with. However, the child's status as a USA citizen means she can enter passport-free.

If you have something being circulated by the Mexican government that says something different I'll appreciate your posting it for us to see.

Thanks! ;-)

Warning from US. Department of state on return to US Port, quote:

Some countries may allow you to enter with only birth certificate. US.law requires that you document your US. citizenship proof and identity when you re-enter the United State.

The following frequently-cited documents are NOT sufficient proof to enter the U.S : US. driver license alone, SS. card, US. military ID, and a non certified photo copy of a birth certificate, a notarized Affidavit of Citizenship signed at the airport in US. or even a voter's registration card. Travelers with only these documents will not be enter the US.

Without proof of both citizenship and identity, traveler will not be allowed to board an airplane to the US. The airline faces a fine of
$ 3300 if a passenger boarded is not admitted to the US., and in addition the airline must bears the cost of flying passenger backto the point of departure.

The best document to prove citizenship is valid passport.
