I've heard ... a notarized letter of permission will do, but you never know in Mexico. Don't forget Mexican insurance.

Not sure if its still gospel, but Mike Nelson indicated in his book "How to Live Better South of the Border" that temporary-imports that are not operated by the person(s) on the title may run the risk of being seized. As in, do not pass Go, do not collect $200, do not ever get your car back. I'm sure there's some play in that rule, but I would find out for sure before you do it. If its possible to just add your name to the title (as long as there isnt a loan on it it shouldn't be too hard) that would be the safest bet.
If you aren't going too deep into the country or if you aren't going to be here long, i would strongly suggest checking out the bus system. Its cheap, the busses are really nice, and its pretty quick. And no worries about bribing, bad roads, or your car getting stolen. Just a thought.
