Before you enter Mexico you have to obtain permit and posted bond or put up credit card to guarantee that you won't sell your car in Mexico with out permission or pay proper tax. If you do so you have to return at the same port that you have entered then declared what you have purchased and traded with supported docs. You may contact Consulate at one near you or at
www.consulmexsf.com
When you enter US border you have to answer the same question If your car does not have license plate or license plate does not match with registration. If you want to do it legally, you have to stop at US custom declare value and pay tax use tax receipt to apply for registration.

Those stickers tend to fall off in the heat .... so maybe if you taped it to another car window and had the paperwork that goes with it ... you might get a sleepy agent.

Problem is if they did catch you ... they might give you a really hard time. Mailing it and the piece of paper/certificate back would mean nothing. I would just plan on forgetting Mexico with a car from now on.

cannot do that, we travel to Monterrey about three times a year and i need to go in my vehicle. would appreciate any other answers. i guess it was pretty dumb to trade in my vehicle before i made another trip, should have waited until i went down to take it off. but what is done is done so now i have to figure out if they will charge my credit card if they do not accept it without the original vehicle it was on.

The story is that nobody has ever had their credit card billed ... but of those ... nobody has ever turned in the paperwork without a car. Maybe playing dumb, forgetful, registering your new car in another name ... kind of things would work better.

Anyone new to this board following this thread should keep in mind...

You MUST turn in that sticker with the vehicle attatched before you cross the border back into the US. To not do so will create a big hassle if/when you try to take another car into Mexico at a later date. The Mexican government has no other way of knowing that you didn't sell the first vehicle while you were in Mexico. Mexican customs does have a database and they do check it. They can be very obstinate about letting you bring in another vehicle.

I can think of only a few things to try. Perhaps your spouse could import the "new" vehicle when you cross, if her name wasn't on the old registration. Keep your name out of it, if possible. You might also go to the automobile dealer and get a copy of the bill of sale with a notarized letter and go the courthouse in that county and get a letter from them or... Perhaps the licensing bureau will have some sort of proof of sale in the US that Mexico would accept. Mexican customs agents like official looking letters with notary stamps.

Lucky for you that you traded it at an automobile dealership. There is a fair amount of paperwork generated in those transactions. That might save you. Be prepared for a long day at customs, though. And it still may fall through.

Buena suerte

Ken

Default vehicle permits

I can tell you from a nasty experience about the stickers. I live permanently in Mexico & have travelled in and out many times. HOWEVER, Feb. of this year I went to Calif. to sell my truck to a friend. I got to the check out point south of Nogales & turned in my permit. I was really tired and didn't think straight. I asked for a receipt & the man said they didn't do it any more as everything was put on the computer. DUMB, DUMB. When I came back 11 days later w/ a new vehicle & went to the window to pay my fee, I was rejected because my truck had never been deleted from the computer. NO RECEIPT, NO PROOF, NOT ENTRY w/ the new car. Spent five days fighting with the aduana: I had a bill of sale, receipt from the toll booth, & my FM-3 stamped. Tough luck buddy, no entry. Soooo, my wife had to travel for 33 hours on a bus to Nogales & get the sticker in her name. Be damn sure you get a receipt for your sticker. The aduana told me he is sure the man took my sticker & papers & sold them.

I have the sticker, paperwork that goes with it but not the truck. I got a 2005 dodge ram now and the old truck was a dodge ram 2003 not much difference but the color, do you think if i put the sticker on this truck and then take sticker in like that was the truck it was on, they will notice?...
