Post Visas - Frequently Asked Question

Lot's of people have asked about the ability to work in Mexico, and what the requirements are.

Working in Mexico is not an automatic option, and in some cases can be difficult. The government's position is that you will only be permitted to take a position that a Mexican national cannot fulfill.

For example, opportunities do exist for English language teachers, Real Estate agents, business owners who start a business in Mexico (and can then hire locals), work that requires special knowledge or advanced study or degree, or as a representative for a foreign company, and other such jobs where English language skills would be required.

So it's more of a gray area, but the more likely the local market could fill the job, the less likely you'll be issued the permit to work in Mexico.

The next requirement would be for you to obtain a proper visa. The most common visa to work in Mexico is the FM-3, which comes in many flavors depending on your profession and the job.

Be sure to check with your Visa Directory, and follow up by checking the list of Consulates of Mexico where you will need to apply for it.

If anyone has any recent experience in actually getting a job in Mexico I'd like to hear from you and have you share your experience here.

Thanks, Rolf

This week I celebrate the anniversary of my fifth year in Mexico. The last five years have not been easy, but I have survived and I am now in the process of thriving. I even have a clear vision of my future. A future in Mexico. I would encourage all those who question the possibility of working in Mexico to pursue their dream. It is possible. It may not be legal, however in Mexico legal is many times not the way things are done. This may be difficult for Northerners to grasp. Mexico is a different culture and this means different ways of thinking and doing things. Legal and what is good for the common people are not always the same. Come to Mexico, look around, explore and find your place. As far as living and working in Mexico are concerned it could not be more fitting to say “ when there is will, there is a way”. Best wishes.
