Default Legal driving requirements

I am interested to know if there is a legal requirement in terms of people in a car. What I mean is that if a car has a capicity for 5 persons, is the driver breaking the law by having 8 people in the car ?

I am also interested to know if seat belts are a mandatory requirement within Mexico.

Many thanks for any help.

Simon.

I saw 9 people in a VW Bug (Sedan) in Puebla, Mexico. I saw 4 people on a
motorcycle in Ecatepec, Mexico. I saw 12 men in a full size pickup in
Comonfort, Mexico, 2 in front and 10 in the back. Hey, this is Mexico!

This is one of those "your luck may vary" instances. In Puebla state (not sure about the rest of Mexico) they finally passed a law this year requiring both front seat occupants to wear safety belts, along with banning drunk driving. Better late than never I guess.

Quite often we pack 6-7 people into our 5 seat Tsuru, but when possible, I try to put the extra person in the back if they will fit, that way the seat belts in the front are fastened. I've passed cops in both instances, and never had a problem, but I do know people who have been pestered about it.

Put it this way, if you can operate within the law, do it. If not, especially for short distances, you'll most likely have no problems.

Default Driving in Mexico

I don't know about the rest of the estados, but my husband got a ticket for driving without a seatbelt. Of course, he just gave the cop 100 pesos and all was forgiven. Same thing happened when he made a left turn across traffic into a parking area. I have the impression that many of the rules are made up as they go along, based on the perceived ability of the driver to pay. As for me, I take the bus; it's much easier on my nerves.

jomarshall1943, there are laws in most states that require the wearing of seat belts, as well as other driving rules . . . just like "back home." You and your significant other should obey the rules, pay the fines if you violate them . . . and stop adding to the problem by bribing policemen. Familiarize yourself with life in Mexico, and things will go better, for us all.

Quien Soy--I cannot control the actions of my husband. I am here to observe, be kind and set an example by my own actions. It is not my desire to add to any problems that have existed nor to create new ones. I'm sorry if my posting was interpreted that way. Yes, the seat belt thing is the law, but here in our town it is randomly observed and just as randomly ticketed.
