We're gathering info in anticipation of retiring to Mexico (Oaxaca/Puerta Escondido area) in a few years. Have read several books, etc., but none have mentioned the type of electrical current. Is it AC or DC? Also, would you agree that it makes sense to purchase any electronics (computer, stereo, TV, etc.) once we've relocated? Thanks.

Itīs AC. Anything you buy up there will work down here unless you go somewhere really off the track, perhaps. Most electronic gear is cheaper to purchase up in the U.S.
Man, for a moment there, I thought you were asking some kinky *** question. What a relief! |

I would purchase most of appliances in the US and bring them in. That's what we did when we moved to SMA. A new friend who recently retired from Texas sold her appliances and planned to purchase in Mexico. She spent $1000 on a flat screen TV - not pecos but dollars. She has spent a small fortune replacing appliances.
We did have to buy a DVD because our American on would not work in Mexico because of the region 4 status of Mexican DVDs. But it only cost $120 and its a Sony and has lots of bells and whistles. |

We did not bring any appliances other than a two cup coffee maker which we carry everywhere we travel. It is still going strong, BTW.
In 2001 when we moved to Mexico, we found the prices and brands to be much the same as in the U. S. A. At the time we were in Puerto Vallarta (PVR). We had several options for shopping but bought most things at either Sam's or WalMart. Our 26" flatscreen cost about USD$360. Now one can buy the same for a third less. Things like coffee makers, can openers, blenders, toasters, micro wave ovens are readily available. The one thing we have not found, even in Guadalajara, is a food processor. We have a friend bringing one of those to us from the States for Christmas. In Oaxaca, you have a very good shopping center, Sears and may other options. Check with the folks on the Oaxaca forums for more accurate advice for that area. If you do not have those links, e-me and I will be happy to send them to you. To do so, just click on the QUICK LINKS and choose Private Message.
