I am looking to work with artisans to make custom pieces. I would like to base myself in San Miguel de Allende. Although I've heard that there are a lot of people making crafts in that area, do not know where to look for them! I am most interested in woodworkers and wool rug weavers. Any tips?

There are numerous highly regarded weavers and wood carvers in Oaxaca's outlying villages.
For weavers, look into Teotitlan del Valle and Santa Ana del Valle; for woodcarving, Arrazola and San Martin Tilcajete. I'd suggest a visit to the area to get a feel for the community, then visit the artisans in the villages mentioned to see if they accept students. You might also check out the area around San Cristobal de las Casas, in the state of Chiapas. |
