I went to the Mexican consulate today and the lady handing out tourist visas said I might need IDs for my children to enter Mexico. We will be there for about 9 days. They are 3 and almost 1. Is this true? Do I need photo IDs for them, or can I get by with birth certificates, social security cards, and shot records?

You need copies of birth certificates certified for both and notarized letter of consent from the father of the children or the letter from the court indicated that you are the sole guardian.

I think you can list children on passports, but am not certain. Yes, birth certificates suffice but you're also supposed to have an official photo identification card. Social Security cards are not legal identification. Also, if traveling with only one parent, you'll want to have a notarized letter of permission from the other parent giving permission to remove the children from the USA. I don't think I've ever heard of Mexican immigration agents refusing entry to children traveling with their parents. Check with your airline to see what it's policy is. They'll be a good barometer of what you'll face when you get to Mexico.

OOps!
I meant to say that my husband would be coming as well. I will see what we can do in the next week as far as photo IDs are concerned. |
