Default Import regulations

Hello, I have a house in Rosarito and am wondering what the import laws are as far as bringing items down to my house. The house is just about finished and I am going to be bringing down household items, furniture, and occasionally construction materials. I have been told so many different things that I am not really sure as to what I will be taxed on. If anyone has a clue as to the actual amount a person can bring in materials before they have to pay taxes I would sure like to know. Thank you.

Your question has no correct answer as no matter what the regulations the aduaneros decide what they will allow. I always thought that Baja was a free zone? Do you have to clear customs? Here is the answer as I understand the regs.

If you have an FM3 you can bring in furniture and other household items free of duty. BUT I think it can only be done once. The goods have to be listed with serial #,s and description in Spanish. I think it has to be stamped by a the Mexican consulate. The goods are not supposed to be new.
When you cross the border you can bring $50 per person duty free. After that a special rate for casual entries applies. It it was 17% last year. It might be a little lower this year. That rate includes the 15% Iva. This rate is for goods under $1000 US. If you exceed that amount then you lose your casual import status and full duty and taxes applies.. The rates vary according to the goods but are generally quite high. You need a customs broker to do the paperwork. Many items are either prohibited or you need an import license. Fertilizer and soil are an example: not allowed. Lumber is supposed to be prohibited unless it is sprayed with an insecticide. Goods from Asian countries have 50% and higher duties. Have fun!
