Mexico lovers: I was wondering which could be the best beach in Mexico? I will not lie to you, I run a page about the beaches in Mexico and I want to know your opinion of any beach that could be interesting in Mexico...of course I know the famous ones, like Cancun, Acapulco, Tulum, Puerto Escondido...but tell me about secret and unknown beaches in Mexico...
So, there will be two questions? 1) Which one is the best beach in Mexico? 2) Which one is the best unknown beach in Mexico? Thanks a lot for your contributions!!

Hola Supervaca -
I've been coming to Los Cabos for 20 years and living here full time for the past 7. IMHO, Chileno Beach is a jewel, as it is beautiful, uncrowded (except for Sundays), safe for swimming and fabulous for snorkeling. In April 2008, it was awarded Mexico's Clean Beach Certification. Playa Chileno is located midway between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

On the Pacific = Huatulco, Oaxaca. The many choices of beaches are very good and it's not like any of the super resort towns... yet. There are beaches so secluded, you need a boat to get there, because they haven't made roads, yet. You can even camp at Tangolunda, which is a great camp site with facilities and walking distance to beach.

Also... on the Caribe side, which is easily the best of Mexico... skip Cancun and head south along the Riviera Maya. There are super resorts to minor cabanas to rental homes. There are straight beaches or quiet huge bays. Go further south to Costa Maya near Chetamuyil (sp?). I was just west of it at Lagunas Bacalar. AMAZING lagoon experience!!!

That question is as hard to ask as judging the cutest baby contest. The "best beach" is the one that you like nest based on your criteria. Some want a beach with music, waiters serving cold drinks and lots of people. Others want an isolated beach away from it all with untouched tidepools, starfish and only the sound of breaking waves. Some like Cancun / Acapulco / Los Cabos hot weather while others prefer milder, San Diego like climates as you will find along the northern Baja Pacific coastline.
There is no single best beach for all, and that is a good thing...

For beauty and safe swimming:
--- almost anywhere along the so-called "Mayan Riviera", but watch for coral --- Playa Chacala a few miles north of Rincon de Guayabitos --- Playa Carrizalillo a couple of miles north of Puerto Escondido (Oaxaca), (ignore Lonely Planet's comment that it's " in a rockier cove but is OK for swimming". It's down a long flight of stairs, absolutely beautiful and fabulous for safe swimming. Several good palapa restaurants as well. For walking: ---Playa Cerritos 5 miles north of Mazatlan ---Playa Larga a few miles south of Zihuatanejo For wave noise to sleep to: ---the thumpers that pound Melaque For the most beach vendors per square foot: ---Playa Los Muertes in Puerto Vallarta |

We don't go to the beach for the water nor the surf nor the beer. We go to the beach for the women.
