In May 2005 we drove to San Carlos with our truck and 5th wheel trailer and set up the trailer at an RV park in SC. On May 8 we took our truck to Empalme and it was stolen that day, never recovered. We filed all necessary police reports, notified the insurance, etc.,. and left the country at the end of May with our US friends towing us home with their truck. We now want to come to SC again for the month of January. We have a new truck and the same 5th wheel. Our 180 day visas were stolen with our truck in Mexico, so I assume we will have to buy new ones? Also, we are concerned our being able to get back into the country since our old truck does not show having left Mexico in the customs records. Who should we talk to? The border customs, when leaving Mexico, did not want to even take a copy of our stolen truck report. They gave me a number to call, saying it was a Mexican official that we must talk to. The number is 011-52-559 157 38 93. Is anyone out there having an experience such as ours?? Advise, experience and what to do, and pitfalls to avoid will be most helpful. Thanks, Betty and Bob.

You are going to have lots of fun. The correct procedure is to go to Aduana (there is an office in Guaymas) with your police report. Technically import duties are due as they consider it the same as being sold (go figure). However I think(key word) they just cancel your permit as if you had turned it in. When you get to km21 there is a booth behind the Banjercito near the photocopy guys. This is where you go when you have problems. He/she is supposed to be an ombudsman. Be polite and humble. He might be able to help. Or you could just go to the Sonora Only booth and tell your story. I assume you do not get a federal permit. There is a Federal rep. in the office at Sonora Only. He could make things happen. You do not need to worry about your tourist visas. No one turns them in and they are not tracked. Say nothing. Good luck. Please post your results. Oops one more thing: Make sure you have all your apers from the car theft. Did you make an insurance claim? Do you have those papers? Who was your insurance agent? Get them to give you a notarised letter outlining the theft and the fact that they paid for the loss. This will really help.

Others can chime in on this idea, but if all you had was the truck before (no other cars) and they were registered in Bob's name instead of Betty...could Betty just not register the vehicle this time if her name is on the title? If thats possible it might save them a lot of hassle. Would they check for spousal stuff as well?

That MIGHT get you into the country this time , but if you go back and forth I would be worried they might stop you. Better to face it now.

Anytime anything like this happens in a foriegn country and especially Mexico (where you will be traveling again) always get a copy of the Police Report! Do the right thing and contact the Aduana and get this thing handled correctly.
