Default Retiring in Merida

There are many many Mexicans who provide the services that you describe. And they charge a lot less than most Americans would be willing to do the work for. Their work ranges from "not so good" to "excellent" and is getting better all the time. You should probably consider another line of work, as Mexico will not look kindly on an expat who takes away jobs from locals.

My husband and I are also considering a move to Mexico. We are not sure where abouts yet because we are still trying to find more information. We have been retired for 5 years and are presently living in central British Columbia. Looking forward to some warm weather to replace the six months of winter we have here. Can I ask you why you chose Merida over other places. Thanks for any help you can offer. Patti

I purchased a home in Baja after looking and researching for about 15 years.

My suggestion is to determine what your needs are regarding climate, living costs, medical, shopping, entertainment, recreation, local transportation, other ex-pats and ease of travel back to the US.

Once you have established a list of needs, determine which locations fit your needs. With that "short list" visit each area for a one to two week time period in each of the seasons, explore, look for shopping, medical, recreation, entertainment, check the cost of living and the cost of housing....seek out other ex-pats in the area and talk to them.

Be sure that you and your spouse "really" want to make the move!!!!!!

Only after you research each area, select the special place.........

Then start your research on how to do it legally.....getting FMT's or your FM-3's; how are you going to register and insure your car; how will you handle your banking.....what will you do for a catastrophic illness..........

A lot to think about and research........get your ducks in a row first, then everything else becomes an adventure.
