Unhappy Mexican law

I have heard stories from my children in Matamorus that they were robbed by the Police. They were made to go to the ATM and withdrawl funds. Does this sound true? If so is there any recourse?

Default crooked police in Mexico??

Yes, and no.

There are crooked police in Mexico, but not all of Mexico. Graft and corruption are slowly being weeded out of the Mexican political garden, but
some of it still exists. Here in my State and City of Querétaro, police are very trustworthy. But in the state of Mexico, just to the south, they are not to be trusted. It is one of the things that have to change before Mexico can become a greater place to live. Bear

Quién Soy Yo? has a spectacular aura about
Default

Yes, it sounds very believeable. Very Mexico. Consider the situation as do most Mexicans - all policemen and politicans are corrupt. Almost without exception.

Default Police

In the frontier area and the frontier towns especially, there is great corruption and a dangerous drug culture. The interior of Mexico is an entirely different place and quite safe. The police have usually been helpful and courteous to us. On rare occasions when a trafico wanted a bribe, we confronted him with his illegal act, asking for his ID and indicating that we would have the matter investigated; it always resulted in no ticket, no fine, no problem. They know they would lose a valuable job and we know it is illegal to give a bribe. You could report the matter to PROFECO if you can identify the culprit; very unlikely. There are also "police look-alikes" who are actually criminals doing the sort of thing you describe. They can be dangerous.
