Default Medical Care in Oaxaca

I am considering a job offer, teaching English at a new university in Ixtlan, about an hour's bus ride from Oaxaca City. One concern I have is medical care - I am in generally good health for my age (60) but do have high cholesterol, which requires monitoring and medication. While I would have coverage through IMSS, I don't know if it would cover this kind of care, so I anticipate needing to find a good private doctor in Oaxaca to monitor this condition. The job pays rather well for Mexico, so I would have disposable income to pay for out-of-pocket health-care expenses if it comes to that. I would really appreciate feedback from anyone currently living in Oaxaca.

Mil gracias,

Marsha

Default Medical care in Mexico

Marsha,
By way of some comfort, I was in hospital 3 days and nites, private room,
emergency room costs, heart specialist, medications, tests, etc., the whole
stay, everything, was 1260.00 US. This was in Mexico City, not Oaxaca, but I think there can be some comparison. If you have some disposable income, or a little savings, it will (should) be OK. I have never bothered to get Medical Insurance here in Mexico. The costs are just not that bad, but thats just my opinion. Bear

Thanks, Bear, for that true story. I trust that good health has returned to you after your stay in the hospital. Having been unemployed and without health insurance for some time in the States, one reason (among many) I'm looking forward to moving to Mexico is that I'll be able to afford to pay for health care there, even without private insurance.

Default Medicine in Mexico

Marsha,
I came to Mexico to retire with 2 heart stents in place. The trip to hospital in Mexico City (Guadalupe Tepeyac), was just a scare. But they kept me in for observation and gave excellent, quality care. After careful testing, they said I was fine. The Doctors actually spend some time with you here and show great compassion. You have nothing to fear about hospital care here
in Mexico. Also, all medications I need are available (3) and total per month without Insurance 82.00 US per month. USA is about 300.00 w/o Insurance
(thats Generic). Dont let Medical hold you back.

i am very pleased with the medical industry in mexico. you have many labs. for testing , it does cost some money but nothing near as what you would pay in the usa. you can get a full body scan for about 1,600 dollars versus in the usa 8,000+
one has to remember that most of the doctors have studied in other countries and return to their homeland to practice medicine. in what ever town you end up living or visiting , the locals know who is the specialist in what ever problem you have.
i had a bump on my back and went to the local specialist and he told me it was just a ball of fat, he began the procedure and also asked me if i wanted to have the mole removed since he could use the surgical tools from the original procedure..........i said ok..... 10 minutes later .... went back a week later for him to remove stiches and he charged me 800 pesos for the 2 removals and 400 pesos for the visit for stich removal.
i cant complaint.
