Just got through watching a report of FOX News Channel about "expressed kidnappings" my god, the things that they showed in the report have me wondering just what the hell is being done by both Mexico and USA .
Even some Mexican police were arrested for helping rescue two FBI men who were beaten by these bandits. I thought Mexico City was a good place, tell me that what ive seen is only a small insignificance, and that not every place is lax in the safety and security of all .. |

It is neither a good place to visit nor to live, in my opinion.

Teresita,
A "ganga" is a "bargain". Why would that make Mexico City a bad place to live? La Isla |

Do not be sharp, Miss Isla. You know full well the lass meant gangs. Be sweet.

I looked up Teresita's profile and found out that she's a Spanish teacher, so obviously the use of "gangas" was a little joke on her part. I thought it was an example of really bad Spanglish, something that grates on my ESL/Spanish teacher nerves, hence my first comment.

Ms. Isla, Teresita is just a bit too subtle for us, it seems. We need to get smarter.

I have spent about four weeks in Mexico City in the past two years. I find it a great metropolis but have to agree with DonPalomares that I would not want to live or work there. It is very polluted and congested, and some very unsafe areas.
However, once you get outside of the Ciuadad', Mexico is a wonderful country and probably safer than most of the urban areas in the USA-with the exception of the border towns where the drug cartels are duking it out. As with anything, use common sense, be careful at night, and enjoy. Mexico City for a trip to see the Zocolo, Palacio Nacional or Metropolitan Cathedral is very enriching, as well the pyramids at Teohutican (didn't spell that right, I am sure). Don't wait for a new government to go. Fox's government is as corrupt as the previous ones. It would take a major revolution to change things....but don't be afraid to travel there, it is great. I hope to live near Atlacomolco someday . Last edited by jcraz1 : 08-21-2005 at 03:55 PM. |

Mexico City is the stinky armpit of Mexico. I try to avoid going there at all costs. Not only is it dirty, unfriendly, mostly ugly, and yes it can be extremely dangerous. My ex-husbands cousin was robbed of his vehicle at gun-point in a "good" area in daylight at about 2pm. There have also been a rash of abductions by cabbies that keep you for awhile, while you use your ATM card, and credit cards to access cash, and then they let you go. Not to mention all other kinds of "legal" robberies done by the police when you happen to have to drive through Mexico City. My advice is to find somewhere nicer to live and work. There are many beautiful and safer places in Mexico. |
