Default Are Americans Safe In Mexico?

I am thinking of investing in real estate in Mexico, and will be traveling
there soon. I have made banking connections, but am concerned for my safety in Mexico City and surrounds.

Check this thread out, it touches on some of your questions. Most of it depends where you are, if you are in border towns or Mexico City be very self-aware of your environs (as you should be in the states or anywhere). Most other areas of Mexico are very friendly and safe. MC and the border towns are too, but you have to be a little more careful and not show off any fine jewlery, etc., and especially be careful of certain sections. Most of the violence in Mexico is not directed at gringos except in some cases on the border.

In my time in Mexico City, Toluca , Atlacomolco, Nogales, and Hermosillo, I felt safer than here in Phoenix, where some wacko just randomly gunned down two Wal Mart employees for no reason.

There is a kidnapping every 60 minutes in Mexico City. Why not move to a more peaceful area? Check out http://JaliscoRealEstate.tripod.com

The OP did not actually say he was moving to Mexico City. For his sake, I hope he doesn´t. I don´t set foot in that place unless there is no avoiding it.

If you want to invest, consider the area around Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, midway between Mexico City and Guadalajara. It is heating up due to a lovely Colonial atmosphere and the convenience of just being 40 minutes from the state capital of Morelia, which is also heating up. Patzcuaro could be the next San Miguel de Allende, a mixed blessing. But good for real estate investments.
