Default New Car Regulations

I heard a rumor that newer cars can be taken into Mexico. Has anyone heard of this? I would like to take a 2003 Vehicle down to Guadalajara and leave it there. I thought the newest car you could take was a 1994.

Default chocolate cars

Presidente Fox has reduced the import tax on US and Canadian registered autos/trucks 1995 and older to approx 10% of current value (as determined by Mexico) until December 31, 2005. "chocolates" from Spanish word "chocar"
to crash, wreck, Mexican humor "junkers".
You may import some cars to Mexico 1996 and newer, but the import tax is quite restrictive, a function of Mexicos Aduana.
You may bring temporarily to Mexico a auto/truck that you own for your use
for the duration of your stay, be it 6 months, one year or more depending upon the visa that Mexico issues you. i.e., FMT, FM3 or FM2.
The rules for these temporary auto imports are another matter (thread) altogether, and are quite easy to comply with ........Bear

Default New Car regulations

If you are an FM-3 or FM-2, you can bring a new car in. All you have to do is register at the aduana, get your sticker & pay $27.50US I have had a new pickup, took it back to the states, sold it and brought a new Ford Escape in Feb. of this year. No problems.

Default Newe Cars

Hey guy I purchased a 2005 auto in Texas earlier this year, and drove it back to Merida where I have been living for the past 5 yrs. There is no problem with U.S. autos being allowed here. As a matter of fact if you have an FM-3 for about 300 peses you can register the vehicle for 5 yrs. without renewal.

Most of the answers you have been given are incorrect. You are asking about PERMANENTLY importing a car. That is entirely different than a $27.00 sticker! The latter is a temporary import sticker and is good for the life of your tourist visa( fmt 6months, FM3 5years if you renew every year) BUT at the end of that time the vhicle must be returned to the USA. You cannot legally import a car that is less than 10 years old. Presently cars from 1990 to 1995 can be imported. New cars, as in 2006, can also be imported.
