Default road from Guadalajara to Manzanillo

Looking for good information on the road from GDL to Manzanillo. I will be flying into GDL in June and need to drive to MZ. How is the road? How long is the trip?

Hyway 54 is a main hyway .... and while not the best 'toll road' in Mexico ... it's good. Actual road condition is good ... but it is still 2 lane for much of the route. I'd estimate around 4 hours for the trip if you don't get lost in Guad. Tolls will be around $30us

Default Lunch

At the second toll booth there is an exit for Tonila. Take it and look for the restaurant sign (I forget the name) and follow the lane into the park-like setting at the foot of the Colima Volcano. The ponds are full of ducks and geese, the setting is idylic, the food and drink are excellent. Be sure to have a look at the big stone oven where they will heat your 'molcajetes'. If you really are enchanted, cross the 'cuota' and on the other side you will find a guest 'hacienda' where you may stay the night and dream of days gone by in 'Old Mexico'.
Also, don't be afraid to use the 'libre', free road, for your return. It will take an extra couple of hours, but the scenery is fantastic.

BajaGringo has a spectacular aura about
Default Free Roads

Of course you should always do a little homework first and check around but if you have the time consider the free roads. I have had some of my favorite trips on the "roads less traveled". Sometimes they have more potholes and slower truck traffic but I have been surprised to find some in very good condition and often very, very scenic.

In this case I'm sure the Libre is in good condition due to the major transportation route ... but there is quite a canyon coming down from the highlands into Colima. I'd only be interested in this one if you have plenty of time and patience

Default The canyon

That canyon is one of the scenic delights of the 'libre'. Yes, the road is in good condition and traffic usually isn't heavy.

Default Toll vs Free highway

I have driven that route several times on both the free and the toll roads. The toll road is faster and easier. The free road is much more interesting and scenic.

Good luck getting out of GDL without getting lost. It's a *****.
